With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of our dad Roderick Dolphis Fagnan Sr., also known to family and friends as Rod. Surrounded by family, dad passed away peacefully on April 6,2026, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Dad was born in Winnipegosis on April 4, 1960, son of Henry and Alma (Catcheway) Fagnan.
He was the sixth oldest of nine siblings and was a residential school survivor. He lived in Camperville, MB until the age of 14. For 3 of those years, he was in foster care with his younger siblings in Bowsman, and at 13 he was in another foster home with his older brother Fred for one year. At 14 he returned to Camperville with his family until the passing of his dad Henry and his younger brother Robert. At 15 he moved to Winnipeg after the family house burned down. At 17 to 20, dad lived in various places, like Winnipeg, Brandon and Duck Bay, spending most of his life going to school, working and keeping busy until he was no longer able to work. Some of his jobs were casual labour, small house renovations with his daughters, and Yard work with his son in law. His most recent employment was an Outdoor Structural Landscaper for the City of Winnipeg.
In 1980 dad met Elsie (Sutherland) Thompson and together they had two children, Lisa and Robert. They stayed together until 1985 before going their separate ways and losing touch for 10 years. After a brief separation with his kids, dad continued to stay in there lives always showing up for a visit whenever he could. He passed on his traits of his love for music to his children, and to his son, his love for the ladies.
In 1986, dad met Geraldine and by the winter of 87, he married Geraldine “Gubby” Ducharme. Becoming a devoted husband and father, he had Roderick Jr. and Janine. He also raised five other children that he took as own Georgie, Willis, Billy, Elizabeth, and Triston. He taught his family with kindness and integrity, while teaching and protecting his family to stand tall in tough times.
In 1990’s dad remained alone and continued to work in Winnipeg in casual labour and warehouse work. He continued to stay close with his siblings Audrey, Dean, Josie, Lisa and Fred.
About 2005 while going to school in Brandon, Rod reconnected with an old friend he met when he was 17, becoming his partner for 14 years, Clara Peterson. He took her kids Anika, Corbin, Lana and Aila calling them his own, he took Aila and raised her since she was a baby. She always held a special place in his heart and in his life. After his partners passing in 2019, Rod remained alone while staying in touch the family, often taking special trips to Thompson to visit Aila, when she moved away.
He is survived by his sibling’s oldest brother Fred (Peggy); younger sisters Josie (Lucien), Audrey and Lisa.
