Richard Johnson Obituary

Richard John Johnson, better known as RJ, was a man who knew the hard road better than most and finally found peace as he passed away on April 10, 2026, at age 70 years old.

Born in Winnipeg, on February 7, 1956, he lived in many places, Riverton, Gimli and Vancouver. He was a member of Fisher River Cree Nation which he also spent time living there.  He lived a life that was never accused of being boring. Though he had a rough journey in life he spent his final chapter of his life living simply.

He is survived by his Brother Alvin Johnson, Alvins children Crystal and Charmain. His son Kolbie, daughter Sasha and his other daughter & son. His grandchildren Dayton Rudolph, Rihanna Rudolph and Brennan Flett. His Sister-in-Law Sally Bouchey and her children Anthony/Tony (Delores), Peggy Murdock (Vince), Laurie Sinclair (Doug).

His nephews Johnathan/Jay Johnson (Corinne), niece Alice Johnson (Lawson), and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces & great nephews as well as cousins and many friends. The children's mothers are Lorna, Brenda, Haven and Angela.

Grandparents Bjarni and Guðríður Johnson are direct settlers who migrated from Iceland.  They found their way to Gimli and Riverton area. They then settled and had many children who are Great Uncle Harry, Great Aunties Sena, Gudny, Halldora, and Alfa. Fond memories from his childhood of his Icelandic family and numerous cousins who still reside in this area.

He was preceded in death by parents, Alice Williams & John Johnson. Siblings: Brother Wildfred Bouchey (Chick), Sisters; Valerie and Patsy. Daughter Mandy. Nieces Angela Johnson & Shannon Coutu. Nephew Bert, Eric and Derek.  Best Friend Armand Lambert and many aunties, uncles, cousins, extended family members and friends.

He had host of lifetime friends who knew him as a Warrior. Growing up he loved the sport of hockey. He played hockey for many adult teams - he was an excellent athlete.  He loved the gym and working out. He was a man who was a hard worker and very smart. Some of his jobs was working with City of Winnipeg and working on building the Air Canada building, Convention Centre and at CN Railroad and the nickle mines.  He also went to school at Red River College to obtain his Apprenticeship in Carpentry.

He lived a long life outliving most.

Main Street has lost a legend - as he sat in his wheelchair outside the Bell Hotel which he called home. He will be missed by everyone from his hustling downtown to his family & close friends.  All his loved ones will be always in his heart and loved by him. May his spirit journey be great for him bringing him peace and comfort.
