Michael Thomas

On Monday, January 16th, Michael Thomas Sr. passed away peacefully at the age of eighty-three.  He will be truly missed by the love of his life and wife of sixty-three years, Marie (“Granny”) Thomas. The two loved and teased each other constantly throughout the years, and their long-lasting marriage was an inspiration to many. Michael deeply loved his children and leaves behind his son, Andrew (Andy) and daughter-in-law, Jessie; his “girl”, daughter, Valerie; and son, Michael (Mike) Jr. and daughter-in-law, Veronica.  Michael was better known as “Grampa” and his grandchildren were his absolute pride and joy.  He was adored by his grandchildren, Ashley (fiance, Brad), Katie, Olivia, Michael “Mikey” the third, and his great-grandchild, Zailey.

The family has peace in knowing that Michael had many family and friends there to greet him in Heaven including his son, Eric; mother, Maggie; father, Robert, brother, William John, sisters, Florence and Margaret; and many of his poker and coffee buddies.

Michael was born in Cedar Lake, or “the old post”, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father, Robert. Michael moved to Thompson from Easterville to work at Inco and raised his family there.  He was also very well-known for his strong work ethic as a driller/blaster. He would have worked forever if his family hadn’t forced him to retire at the age of seventy-three. In retirement in Winnipeg, he enjoyed many days sitting outside with Granny and loved watching his grandchildren and great-grandchild do what they love. He loved playing poker and made many friendships over the years playing cards at the casino. Although he was a man of few words to those who didn’t know him well, so many were drawn to his kindness and sense of humour, including perfect strangers. He touched the lives of all who had the pleasure of meeting him as evidenced in the many messages shared with family at the news of his passing.

Until we meet again “Old Man”.  We love you.

The Thomas family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Victoria and St. Boniface Hospital who are truly angels on Earth.

Wake service will be held on Thursday January 19,2023 from 6 pm till 12 midnight at Eternal Grace Funerals, 1111 Logan Avenue, Winnipeg.

Funeral service will follow on Friday January 20,2023 also from the chapel at 11 am.

Interment Brookside Cemetery.
