We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Joseph Enard Carlson Wood, of Manto Sipi Cree Nation and God’s Lake, on October 23, 2024, at 4:56 a.m. Born on April 28, 1949, Joe was a beloved father, grandfather, and friend whose wisdom, kindness, and quick wit left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Hockey was Joe’s lifelong passion and refuge. During his youth, while attending residential school, the rink became his happy place. He later played college hockey for the Red River Rebels and went on to thrive with the Winnipeg Tobans, where he forged lifelong friendships. Joe earned the nickname “Slippery Joe” with the Tobans because of his ability to come out of tight situations with the puck. After his playing years, Joe shared his love of the game as a coach, inspiring others through his skill and dedication.
Joe was a proud father to his three sons, Calvin (Frances), Craig, and Little Joe (Nikita), whom he shared with his wife and dear friend, Valerie Wood. Together, they created many memories and remained close until his passing. Joe was also a loving grandfather to Kyle, Julian, James, Logan, Donnie, Savanna, Havanna, Hayley, and the cherished, predeceased memories of Elena and Austin. He was also predeceased by his parents Jemima Wood and Josiah Wood.
Remembered for his kindness, intelligence, and humor, Joe leaves behind a legacy of love and strength. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched.
May he rest in peace, forever in our hearts.
Friends can gather from 2p.m.-5 p.m. at Eternal Grace Funerals to celebrate his life.
