Ernestine Toews (McCallum)

Ernestine Toews (née McCallum), in her 85th years, was the kind of person who made the world brighter simply by being in it.

Born in Brochet, Manitoba, on March 21, 1940, to the late Horace and Marie Adele McCallum (Thomas).  Ernestine, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on March 10, 2026, with her daughter Collette at her side at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg.  She is survived by her loving husband, Micheal (Mike), her daughter Collette, and four sons, Edward (Eddy) Darrell, Donald (Donny), and Ernest.  She also leaves behind her grandchildren, and her large extended families and friends.

Ernestine leaving behind a legacy of lasting love.  She had a generous heart and an adventurous spirit.  She cared deeply for others, offering kindness through quiet acts and a steady presence.  She embraced life with curiosity, joy and fun.  She loved to travel and shared many adventures with her beloved husband, Mike, creating a lifetime of memories.  Ernestine lived to care for those around her. Whether through acts of generosity, unwavering support, or simply showing up when someone needed her, she expressed love through action.  She had a rare gift for making people feel seen, safe, and valued.  Above all else, Ernestine cherished her family.  

Ernestine’s favorite adventures were with her husband Mike being in the mining career lead them traveling throughout Canada.  But her favorite five years was when they moved to Australia and there lead them to other unique adventures as Mike worked in the mines.  From time to time our mother and father would reminisce about their time in Australis and would say “those were the happy days for us.”

The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to doctor Van Jaarsveldt for his compassionate care and support to Ernestine’s final days of her life.  Also, a special thank you to the medical staff at Grace Hospital for their support, too.       

A celebration of life service will be held on May 1, 2026, from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM at the Eternal Grace Funerals (10 - 1111 Logan Ave. Winnipeg, MB)

Cremation has already taken place.
