It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Brady Allan James
Sumner, who left us on August 1st, 2025, at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, MB. He was 23 years old.
Brady was born on February 6, 2002, in Winnipeg, MB. He was a loving son, brother, uncle, grandson, cousin, and friend whose quiet strength and deep kindness left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.
A proud graduate of Maples Collegiate in 2023, Brady had taken some time to rest and recharge and was looking forward to starting an employment program this fall. Known for his tech-savviness, he was always the go-to person for any technical issues around the house. Whether it was fixing a phone or helping with electronics, Brady did it without hesitation and with a quiet confidence.
Brady had a passion for gaming. He loved video games and was especially proud of his PS5. He spent countless hours playing online with friends and was part of a gaming community where he formed lasting friendships. Gaming wasn’t just a hobby—it was a way for him to connect, laugh, and build bonds with others.
Brady also loved his family fiercely. He shared a special bond with his little brother Brentlee and adored his nephews Hayden, Khyren, Romeo, and his niece Gemini. He was the best uncle—playful, caring, and always present—even when they occasionally tested his patience. His love for them always shone through.
Brady was also incredibly helpful around the house. He never complained when asked to lend a hand and could always be counted on to meet his little brother at the bus stop each day. These small, consistent acts of love revealed the depth of his loyalty and heart.
Brady shared a special bond with his beloved kookoo (grandmother) Myrtle Sumner, who was his constant companion and strongest supporter throughout his life, especially during his many health challenges. Born with congenital heart disease, Brady underwent multiple surgeries as an infant and faced numerous hospital stays during his childhood. He met each obstacle with quiet courage, always surrounded by the unwavering support of his family—especially his kookoo Myrtle, who never left his side—his biggest supporter and prayer warrior. Brady was a true survivor, overcoming every obstacle with grace and bravery.
Despite these hardships, Brady lived fully and joyfully. He loved to travel with his family, making unforgettable memories on trips to Disney World (2012 and 2024), Hawaii, and across Canada—from British Columbia, Niagara Falls and Halifax, Nova Scotia—to cheer on his best friend and cousin Chanelle at the 2023 North American Indigenous Games. He also enjoyed road trips across the border to Minneapolis and Fargo, and recent adventures to Kelowna, Edmonton, and Banff.
He also had a few simple joys that defined him—especially his love for Tim Hortons coffee. It was rare to see him without a Tim’s in hand, and if he wasn’t holding one, he was probably texting or calling his mom to bring him his signature triple-triple on her way home.
Brady had a gentle, shy personality, but when he felt comfortable around you, his wit and humor would shine. He had a unique and funny way of expressing himself that his loved ones will always remember with a smile.
Brady is survived by his loving mother Amber Sumner (stepfather Brent Hudson), father Richard Boyd (Kristina), sister Shaelyn Sumner, little brother Brentlee Hudson, nephews Hayden, Khyren, Romeo, and niece Gemini, little sister Reece, and brother Prestyn. He will also be lovingly remembered by his uncles Cory Sumner (Sandra) and Jason Sumner (Teri), maternal grandmother Myrtle Sumner, grandfather Roger Dodge, paternal grandmother Joanne Boyd, and grandfather Charlie Rudolph. Brady shared a close bond with his special cousin and best friend, Chanelle Sumner, and his dear cousin Dezarae Meade. All his special ‘Koo-Koos’ Darlene, Dot, Harriet and Cindy who loved him dearly, along with many more cousins, friends, and extended family, were all touched by Brady’s quiet strength, humor, and kindness.
Brady was predeceased by his great-grandfather William Sumner (1977), great-uncle Cecil Sumner (1977), great-grandmother Hattie Sumner (1996), Papa James Sumner (2001), Molly Shorting (2024), Brian Shorting (2023), and Papa Louie Malcolm (2024).
Brady’s life, though far too short, was full of love, laughter, and resilience. He will be remembered always, loved forever, and missed deeply.
