It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Grace Hourie. On February 22, 2025, at the age of 74, Grace was called home by the Creator
Born on August 21, 1950, in Fairford, Manitoba, Grace was a member of Pinaymootang First Nation. She was predeceased by her mom Sarah Caldwell (nee Woodford); her stepfather, Steve Borso; her daughter, Ursula Hourie, granddaughter, Angelica Hourie; and her three brothers: Albert, Joe, and Gordie.
Grace is survived by her daughter Sylvia Hourie (Cory); grandchildren, Desiree Hourie (Russ), Brendan Cook, and Christian Vermette; great-grandchildren Michael, Jackson, Malcom, Julian, and Evangeline; special friend and companion Tony Harding, as well as close family friend Lilja Tonnellier and the entire Tonnellier family.
When Grace was 18 years old, she moved to Winnipeg, and in 1978, she secured employment with the Winnipeg School Division as a Teacher Aide. Grace was very proud of her Indigenous roots and was ahead of her time, she was teaching students about Indigenous traditions, values and culture long before it was ever implemented into the division curriculum.
She loved her job and remained with the School Division until her retirement in 2007.
After retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her family and playing slots.
Grace was loved by everyone lucky enough to have known her. She will be greatly missed.
Viewing will be held on Tuesday March 11,2025 from 6 p.m.- 9p.m. with cremation to follow.
